Karl Sieveking, Senatsyndikus der Hansestadt Hamburg, an James Colquhoun, Generalkonsul der Hansestädte Lübeck, Bremen und Hamburg in London, betr. die Beschwerde der Firma Anderson, Hoeber & Co. über Handelsdiskriminierungen durch die East India Company, 12. Oktober 1826

Brief

Regest:

Mr. Anderson, chief partner of the most active and respectable firm of Anderson Hoeber & Co. in this place is going to London in order to obtain if possible an alleviation of the heavy duties which the Hamburgh flag is subject to in the ports belonging to the East-India Company. The fact according to the custom receipts [nachträglich ergänzt: of Bombay] he communicated to me, seems to be, that especially the discriminating territorial duties levied by the Company unconnected with the draw-back granted to Brittish Shipping, amount in fact to a prohibition of an important branch of commerce nominally free. Mr. Anderson is perfectly aware that the letter of the convention signed by You cannot be considered as a fondation for his claim.1 He is not without hopes however, a personal pledge of Mr. Huskisson, the view likely to be taken by the board of controul ministerial influence in the Court of Directors, and the state of a negotiation, so ably conducted by You, will assist him in his efforts to nationalize in Hamburgh the East-India trade. By contributing towards this desirable end You will without doubt add to the claims You have allready upon the gratitude of Your constituents.

I am, my dear Sir, with the highest esteem

Yours sincerely

KSieveking
