Die Hamburger Firma Schmidt & Co. wendet sich mit diesem Schreiben an die Firma Bradley & Co. in Hongkong, um ihr die Aufnahme von Geschäftsbeziehungen vorzuschlagen. Als Umschlagplatz für Waren aus China hatte Hongkong neben Shanghai inzwischen so große Bedeutung erlangt, dass es Schmidt & Co. geboten scheint, sich nicht länger allein auf die Verbindung mit der Niederlassung Shanghai der Firma Bradley & Co. zu stützen. Ob die gewünschte Verbindung nach Hongkong tatsächlich zustande kam, ist nicht dokumentiert.

We are aware of the extensive Produced business which you are doing in the London market, especially in Human Hair and Bristles, and should you not be bound by other engagements on the Continent we would be much pleased if we could enter into correspondence with you for the purpose of working your offerings in this market.1 The greater part of the Human Hair for example goes to Continental buyers and these would naturally prefer to receive their offers direct instead of throu London Brokers and dealers and we might safely guarantee a very fair turnover in this article, being in close touch with the most important consumers.1Mit der Chinesischen Revolution (1911/1912) wurden die Vorschriften für Männer zum Tragen eines Haarzopfes abgeschafft, sodass nun menschliche Haare in großen Mengen angeboten wurden, für die es in Europa starke Nachfrage gab. We are specially interested in solid drawn Human Hair, equally assorted 16/18 up to 24/26 or 28 inches, but can also place your offerings in the usual quality, AAA to AAAAA at convenient prices.2 – We would buy from you as principals on the basis of the usual London terms, payment either by your four months sight drafts on London Banker or net cash against documents on steamer’s arrival. – no Commission or brokerage whatever included. 2Welche Qualitäten mit den hier genannten Kategorien genau beschrieben wurden, ist unklar.

All the China Produce which you are working would greatly interest us, we are exceedingly well placed for the whole business and are fully conversant with all its details. For your guidance we may mention that are already in connection with several firms in the North, but are without engagements in Shanghai (and Hongkong). If therefore your Shanghai friends are interested in our offer we would thank you to let us know and we shall then with pleasure communicate with them direct.
